One Such Gray Beast

It is hard to make a post about a cemetery at the end of 2021 upbeat.

Fraola Cemetery is still a modest resting place. There are still grey beasts departing from the earth here. I am still surprised at how far you can get on a bike in a short period of time. However, we've just had snow and it is hard for my 36 year old self to imagine going for a bike ride on New Year's Eve.

The sketch above was done with Diamine Inkvent Ink: Ash.

I'm not even sure if that's its real title, because I doubt there's a building somewhere adjacent to the long field that little prop planes hop out off. As I sit stretching on the subtly moist earth next to the granite chunks above my grandparents, I watch one such gray beast turn around to get a running start.

Before know it, it's above my head and it is time for me to head off before I get too cool. Heading back I start to get the hang of my clipless pedals and life size enough sillouette of a black bear lawn tacky startles me. I don't fall off. Pedaling back up the driveway a little less than an hour since I'd left, the hills don't seem quite as daunting as the used to be.

I even saw the old janitor at the elementary school, Dan, drive by with his magnificently massive gray and black frizzy beard.

15 years ago I was getting ready to go on a little trip... across the country on a bicycle

Now I am getting ready to re-share the blog detailing my self-supported bike tour from San Diego, CA to Saint Augustine, FL (Adventure Cycling Association's Southern Tier). A 15th Anniversary Edition of a blog is a thing people do, right?

Expect to see a few posts through January and then daily posts will begin February 1st. This three month journey will include new sketches and reflections. The world has changed so much since 2007!

The first sketch is right here! I drew the t-shirt design that inspired the name of my blog on blogger. It was also the only "t-shirt" I took on the trip.

In the picture below: it totally cracks me up that I was using a free-be drug advertisement tablet to do my fancy check mark.

While there are many other things still in my queue of things to do before leaving, there are a few tasks I've been able to complete while away from my bike. I have a train ticket from TAC to SAN leaving January 29th at 10:31 am and arriving January 31st at 12:50 am. I also have reservations at the hostel in downtown San Diego for the night of the 30th and 31st. The first of February will be my first day on the road. This gives me a day to see San Diego and gather my wits.

An Inky Advent

12/27/2021

I'm no stranger to Advent calendars, festivities, and traditions; but the Diamine Inkvent Calendar really was something else. Every morning my kids and I hunted for the next door and popped it open to a reveal a new color, sheen, or shimmer.

In my spare moments during the day I plotted how I might integrate the new ink into a drawing or sketch. Ideally the sketch would feel like Christmas or winter. On a good day I was also able to have the sketch relate to some of my devotional texts: Christ in Our Home or Bread for the Day. I've always struggled to actually retain any of the daily readings. However, doing some copy work and the act of choosing one verse to focus on really helped a little more stick. If you followed me on Instagram where I posted daily my inksplorations, you might have noticed the majority of my posts were after 10pm and there were about 6 days that I was a day behind. I still loved the daily reading, writing, and painting practice. I already have my next project lined up and that will be rolling out in the next week or so.

Here is our full review of the calendar. Which inks were your favorites? I'd love to hear in the comments!
