This weekend I had the opportunity to volunteer at Wayzgoose. It's an art festival in Bremerton that uses a steamroller to take printing to epic levels. It was fun to art with other people and make 3' x 3' linocut prints.
It has also properly motivated me to make progress on some of my own print work. I have 6 screens in various states of cleanliness. After I get the remaining old emulsion off, I need to mix up a fresh batch and apply a nice thin layer to dry in a dark place. Then I need to burn my designs onto the screens. This is a really nice project for the summer because it just isn't fun standing outside in the cold January rain spraying a screen with a hose. But before I get to all that, I need to decide what I want to put on the screens and order the transparencies from the office supply store. I'm putting a lot of thought into my choices because I want to keep these on the screens for a very long time. The little screens are great for kids shirts or onesies. I like to have a few cute designs hanging around so I can easily make baby gifts. The two big ones are great for adult shirts, tote bags, tea towels, or ? Then there is a long skinny one that I'm not super sure what to do with. I'm also thinking about applying to carve a 3' x 3' print for Wayzgoose next year... so there is scheming for that. Plus I figured that somethings are just better the size of a stamp (I have several 4"x 6" blanks) and I can just do them that way. This is a screenshot of my Sketch document that I'm using to visualize the hypothetical collection I'll have in the end. Also of note, I would do two different house stamps. One to print the background first and the next to go in with the outlines.

My kids and I sat down to talk about my sparkliest pens and they are all made by Benu. These three pens are all serious eye candy and enjoyable writers. The largest is the Euphoria model in the Pink Guava color. Slightly smaller we have the Talisman model in the Foxglove color. My first was actually a gift (thanks Mom!) and it is the smallest: Ambrosia in Forget-Me-Not. Generally speaking I buy my fountain pens, ink, and paper from GouletPens.com. They are the best and their YouTube channel @Gouletpens is incredibly informative and the Pencast is excessively entertaining. We did have to purchase the Ambrosia Forget-Me-Not directly from Benupen.com. It was also a great experience, but took a bit longer because they are on another continent.
I successfully wrapped up my summer with this Vlog style YouTube video. I hope you can tell how much fun I have making these. Such a fun process for me and I loved sharing all the things I accomplished. The largest of all the projects was my Alaska Wall calendar that you can purchase here on Etsy. It is beautiful. I'm not biased. Every morning in August I woke up energized and eager to see what footage the GoPro had captured over night. I had snippets of the time lapses up on Instagram the whole month of August. It was a blast and I finally got compiled into a YouTube video. So fun to see them back to back in landscape format. Such a great project to do with kids to learn through observation! This is a follow up to my previous post: Daylight Long Exposure that has details about how I use the ND filter. Obviously, at sunset you can do a long exposure without using a Neutral Density Filter. However, by using the ND1000 filter I was able to do very long exposures. I enjoyed the smoothing effect much more this time. Without Filter F4.5 1/40sWith Filter F4.5 25SWithout Filter F5.6 1/60sWith FIlter F6.3 15sI picked up a ND 1000 filter that I could use on our Canon Rebel XS DSLR a couple weeks ago. You can use it to flatten out water or blur parts of your image that are moving because it allows you to take daylight long exposure. Part of the reason for the delay in trying it out was because I would need to use the Manual setting on the camera. This would require my brain. I'm going to detail the steps here so that I can reference it in a couple years when I have forgotten.
Without the ND 1000 FilterWith the ND 1000 FilterJust to recap... I am not sure I prefer the photograph with the filter. I'll have to try out some different subjects and report back later. Click here to see that post. Here's a time lapse that I did on the GoPro Hero 8 Black. Shout out to gouletpens.com for being such a fantastic retailer of fountain pens, etc. They have an amazing focus on education and their YouTube channel is all kinds of entertaining! If you want to learn more about fountain pens, absolutely check them out. I signed up for their email newsletter and logged into my account to add my birthday. Now, on my birthday I get an email with a coupon code for 8 free random ink samples. Obviously, you still have to pay shipping, but I am usually just adding this to my order. I am in no way compensated for my love and support of Goulet Pens... really I just pay them money. April is heavy with birthdays (including my own). I use a perpetual calendar and there are 15 birthdays on it. Typically it is my birthday gift to me to (almost) ignore everyone else's birthday with the assumption that they will all ignore mine. But this year I am going to try to send out a few more cards than normal and it made a great excuse to finally make a bunny stamp. I first started carving stamps when I was about 40 weeks pregnant with Karl in 2014. I've largely gotten away from it and the supplies have been stashed in a drawer. It was great fun to dust off the lino cutter and share a new craft with Karl. In reality I sat down at the dining room table and started to carve my bunny stamp by myself. Karl quickly noticed I have two carving tools. After telling him not to touch it 15 times because it is dangerous and sharp... I relented and found him a larger piece of carving block. Thankfully he required little instruction and he is quite pleased with his handiwork. Originally Posted April 03, 2007

But I so desperately want to be working on my last 21 days. 1050 miles is all I have to go. The salt water spray is nearly stinging my nostrils. April is a heavy month for birthdays. Maybe the fourth of July is an exciting time for a lot of people. I made tuna today. That was exciting.
My post 15 years ago was really just a placeholder post because I didn't have much to say. There was some better discussion in the comments. Do all touring cyclists write? No. But then we don't get to know about them. Made me think about how different the trip would have been if I hadn't documented it. I might have gotten there faster? I might not have been held accountable and not finished the trip? Posting on this blog every day has been holding me accountable to creating. However, sometimes it has me creating content and not art. The content we pulled together for today's post has been on my to-do list pretty much since Valentine's Day when I was gifted the pen. While this is more on the "content" and less on the "art" side of things, I am super excited to get to talk about this pen! Originally Posted April 01, 2007

I also ate crawfish today at the Baptist church's annual crawfish boil. The paint set on my desk includes 28 different paints. I've found that I like my paintings more when I use a limited palette of just 3 or 4. The colors coordinate with each other better and I'm not overwhelmed with color choices. When I have just 4 paints, I have to rely heavily on mixing. Mixing actually gets me way more then 28 different colors. So I've decided to practice with just these 4 paints from Daniel Smith for a while. I'll fill up some full pans to put in my urban sketching kit and I'll even have the chance to pre-mix a couple of colors in the pan. I'm thinking I'll try pre-mixing a green and a grey. That should save me some time when I am out and about. French Ultramarine |
